When you are ready for your first 'real' website, how will you know who should host it?

There are hundreds, or thousands, of companies offering hosting services. Most are legitemate, some aren't. To get you started, I've collected information from a few of them that really want your business.

When I emailed 2 questions to iPowerWeb at 3AM Sunday, Feb 23, 2002 I didn't expect very much, and I was really pleased when the easy one was answered within abut 5 minutes. The hard one had to be forwarded to someone who knew the correct answer, and I got the answer I needed by 10 AM that same Sunday. I was so pleased I immediately went and signed up one of my domains with them. By Sunday afternoon they had my site all set up for me. I'll let you know if I have any problems with them, but that doesn't seem likely. Since I moved my domain to them I have heard that their reputation for customer service isn't the best. Sometimes they answer the question they know the answer to, not the one you ask. So far they have been trouble-free for me. I have started asking Pow Web questions to see how they answer. So far they are doing well. My husband just bought hosting for his new domain at Pow Web and I haven't heard any complaints from him. A friend recently commented that she had emailed them twice and gotten concise answers within minutes both times. That was a real improvement over her previous hosting company!

These companies all have reasonable pricing, and all the extras you are likely to need. This information is from their websites in early 2002. If any of these interest you, visit their sites and see if the details are still correct. Storage Monthly Allowed Data Transfer 3 month total including all charges 12 month total including all charges
Your-Site is clearly the better choice if you can get by with 50MB and 6 GIG transfer. Very few people need more than Your-Site offers. 50MB 6GIG $18 $60
iPowerWeb seems to be a very good choice if you have a lot of traffic. 150 MB 15GIG $59.95 $95.40 (plus free domain)
Lunarpages.com Looks promising but I have no personal experience with them. 200 MB 20GIG $29.85 $95.40
Pow Web has one standard package. 200MB and 12Gigs of data transfer is enough for almost anyone. 200MB 12GIG $43 $93.24 (plus 2 extra free months)

I didn't do a huge amount of research on the rest of these, so I can't say which are the best. However, these all seem to be fairly reasonably priced.

Hosting services range in price from less than $10 a month to over $200. Most individuals and small businesses will do just fine with the lower priced ones.

There are also free websites available from many sources. Not many of them will give you the professional look you probably want, and none of them will let you keep your URL (website address) when you move on to another host.

With your own domain name you can move to a different host and still keep the same address. That's important for a business that wants to keep its customers.
